2011 ANNUAL APPEAL

Dear Members, Friends, and Neighbors,

Thanks to your generous support the Great South Bay Audubon Society (GSBAS) had another successful year in our educational and conservation endeavors as well as our stewardship of Brookside County Park. We hope you’ll consider making another donation in support of your local Audubon chapter.

Your support enabled us to have several free programs at Brookside County Park. "Children’s Art Time" was held on October 3, 2010; "Sea Shore Safari" presented by Tracy Marcus, Marine Educator from Cornell Cooperative Extension was held on March 6, 2011; and "Northern Bobwhite Quail" complete with quail chicks soon to be released in Connetquot River State Park was held on June 5, 2011.  Our renowned annual outdoor program was held on June 16, 2011.  Sue Krause from Sweetbriar Nature Center presented "Birds of Prey."

Local students from Sayville High School, East Islip High School, and East Islip Middle School continue to use Brookside as an outdoor lab for their environmental and biological studies.  We continued our scholarship program, awarding a total of $1,500 to four high school seniors who will be majoring in the environmental sciences. We also funded two campers through Starflower Experiences, Inc. and one camper to attend a NYS DEC camp.

Our newly established Brookside Butterfly Garden Club had a very busy year preparing the soil and planting butterfly and Hummingbird friendly plants.  Several species of butterflies and two Hummingbirds have been observed enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Your continued support of our Annual Appeal goes above and beyond your membership dues and allows us to also:  i) continue maintaining the historic property at Brookside, ii) sponsor public education programs, iii) sponsor children’s programs, iv) purchase bird feeders and the large amount of seed and suet necessary to feed the birds, v) properly catalog and expand our library, vi) provide free monthly general meeting programs at Connetquot River State Park Preserve.

Thanks to our volunteer tour guides, Brookside tours are available on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.  The first Sunday of every month, tour guides Janet Gremli and Juliane Wohler host the GSBAS' Young Naturalists.

Thank you for in advance for participating in the GSBAS' Annual Appeal.  We greatly appreciate your support of our chapter.  Please come see Brookside for yourself at 59 Brook St, West Sayville, NY.

Sincerely,
Judy Davis, Chapter President
